When is whale season on Maui?

Maui whale season runs December through April. Peak season, when the ʻAuʻau Channel holds the most whales, is January through March. A few early whales show up in October and November and a few mothers and calves linger into May, but December is when the season really starts and the boats are out every day. West Maui tours run through mid or late April.

What is the best month to see whales in Maui?

February. It has the highest counts in almost every year of the Great Whale Count and Sanctuary Ocean Count, and it is the month of World Whale Day on Maui. January and March are nearly as good. If you want fewer boats and calmer seas, late March and April are quieter but still full of mothers and calves.

Can you see whales from shore in Maui?

Yes, easily, and West Maui is the best place on the island for it. The lookouts along the Honoapiʻilani Highway between Māʻalaea and Lahaina (Papawai Point and McGregor Point) sit high above the channel where the whales concentrate. Kāʻanapali Beach and the Kapalua Coastal Trail are also reliable in peak season. Bring binoculars and go in the morning when the water is glassy.

Where do whale watching boats leave from in West Maui?

Most leave right off the sand at Kāʻanapali Beach, in front of Whalers Village, where a shuttle or the boat itself noses onto the beach. Mala Boat Ramp in north Lahaina is the other West Maui launch. Lahaina Harbor reopened for limited daytime commercial use in December 2025 after the 2023 fire, and a few operators have returned, but most West Maui whale watches still load at Kāʻanapali or Mala.

Is a small raft or a big catamaran better for whale watching?

It depends on your group. A raft like Maui Whale Adventures’ twin-engine adventure boat puts you a few feet above the water with 20 or fewer people, covers more water quickly, and is the pick for photographers and anyone who wants to be close. A catamaran like Teralani’s gives you a stable, shaded deck, a bathroom, lunch and an open bar, and is the better choice for grandparents, toddlers, and people who get seasick. Both run naturalists and hydrophones and both guarantee sightings.

How close can boats get to the whales?

Federal law makes it illegal to approach a humpback whale closer than 100 yards (300 feet) in Hawaiian waters, by boat, kayak, paddleboard or swimming, and 1,000 feet by aircraft. Whales, however, can approach you. When a curious whale surfaces next to a boat the captain puts the engines in neutral and waits, and these muggings are the encounters people remember for life.

Why do humpback whales come to Hawaiʻi?

To breed, give birth and nurse. Hawaiʻi’s water is warm, clear, shallow and almost free of orcas and large sharks, which makes it a safe nursery for calves born with little blubber. Adults do not feed here; they live off the fat they built up in Alaska all summer. The shallow basin between Maui, Lānaʻi, Molokaʻi and Kahoʻolawe is the single most important humpback breeding ground in the United States.

How many humpback whales come to Hawaiʻi each year?

NOAA estimates more than 10,000 humpbacks, the majority of the North Pacific population, use Hawaiian waters each winter. The population has recovered from fewer than 1,500 in the North Pacific when whaling ended in 1966. Maui consistently records the most whales of any island in the volunteer counts: 694 in the January 2026 Great Whale Count and 847 in February 2026.

Do whale watching tours guarantee you will see whales?

Both operators on this guide do. Maui Whale Adventures offers a free second trip if you do not see a whale, and says it has never had to use it. Teralani gives you a complimentary Classic whale watch if the Premium trip comes up empty. In January through March a no-whale trip is almost unheard of.

What should I bring on a whale watch?

Sunscreen (reef-safe), a hat that will not blow off, sunglasses, a light windbreaker for the morning trips, a camera with a zoom or your phone, and a dry bag or zip-lock for it. Wear shoes you can get wet, since beach loading means wading in. Rafts have no restroom, so go before you board. Catamarans have one.

Is whale watching safe for young kids?

Yes. Teralani’s Premium Whale Watch welcomes all ages and children 5 and under ride free, and the stable catamaran has a restroom and shade. Maui Whale Adventures takes ages 2 and up on its raft, which is faster and bouncier; it is best for kids who can sit still and hold on for two hours. Both boats have life jackets in children’s sizes.

Can you hear the whales sing?

Yes. Both operators lower a hydrophone, an underwater microphone, and play the song over the boat’s speakers. In the ʻAuʻau Channel in February you can often hear several males at once. Snorkelers and divers off West Maui sometimes hear the song through the water with no equipment at all.

What happened to Lahaina Harbor?

Lahaina Harbor was destroyed in the August 2023 wildfire. Mala Boat Ramp and Kāʻanapali Beach became the main West Maui launch points. The state began a phased reopening of Lahaina Harbor for limited, daylight-only commercial use on December 15, 2025, and some operators have returned, but the harbor is still being rebuilt. Check your tour’s meeting point when you book.

What is the difference between a breach and a spy hop?

A breach is the whale launching most of its body out of the water and crashing down on its side or back, usually fast and with a huge splash. A spy hop is slow: the whale rises vertically until its eyes clear the surface, holds there to look around, then sinks back down with hardly a ripple. See the full behaviors guide for the other eight.
